A kite is a kind of (airecraft. It is made of material, such as cloth or paper, that is stretched over a frame. A kite uses the force of wind to fly. It is gaided by a long string from the kite to the ground A tail gives a kite stability to keep it upright. There are four forces of flight that help a kite soar through the air. Wind pressure pushes on the kite from below creating an upward force known as lift. Weight is the force of gravity pressing downward on the kite. Created by the stretching of the line, thrust is the force that moves the kite forward. Drag is a backward pull on the kite created by air resistanse. The first kites were invented by the Chinese around 1000 BC. Those kites were used by the army for different tasks, such as sending messages. Today, flying kites is a fun hobby. Kites are also used by scientists to carry tools, such as termometers, into the atmosphere to study the weather.
