Meanwhile, the artists in China and Japan were also creating works to describe historic events and people. Many of those works were in the form of handscrolls – long scrolls of paper or silk (usually about 9 to 12 m long) that were rolled around wooden dowels. The scrolls could be unrolled from right to left, one arm-length at a time, as the viewer “read” the picture. Texts often accompanied the picture or helped narrate the story.
